Dangers of Distracted Driving

Three Types of Distraction

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2011 alone 3,000 individuals lost their lives because of distracted driving. Most people do not even realize that there are really 3 different types of distractions that can come into play when driving:

  • Manual: The action of actually removing your hands from the wheel
  • Cognitive: Taking your mind off the road and how you should be responding to other drivers
  • Visual: Looking away from the road and what is happening around you

Forms of Distraction

While texting and driving or cell phone use is rampantly becoming one of the biggest reasons for distracted driving accidents, it is not the only activity to blame. Distracted driving is considered to be any action that can take the driver's focus off of the road and thereby endanger other drivers, passengers or pedestrians. This could include the following activities:

  • Texting and driving
  • Eating and drinking while driving
  • Having conversations with other passengers
  • Operating a GPS systems or reading a map
  • Working the radio or iPod
  • Doing hair or makeup

These actions are not unlawful or illegal, but they can still cause horrible accidents if done in excess. It is always a good idea for drivers to keep their attention on the road as much as is possible. Avoiding these distractions is something that could potentially save a life or prevent a severe accident from happening. Texting and driving is still the most dangerous out of all these distractions as it takes away your mind, your eyes and your hands from operating your car, truck or other motor vehicle.

While there are numerous reasons that can contribute to driver distraction, many of these car accidents occur due to the use of hand held devices while driving. In the State of Ohio, there is a statewide ban on all cell-phone use for those that are new drivers, as well as a ban on texting and driving. Despite this fact, there are still numerous accidents caused by these very distractions every year.
