Semi-Truck Drives Off I-70 Overpass Onto Route 68

A semi-truck drove off I-70 and crashed on to Route 68 below after car merging from I-70 struck the rig.

Around 1:00 p.m. on June 18, 2011, the driver of a 2010 Toyota Camry pulled into the oncoming path of the semi-truck. The action of the driver caused the truck to veer off the left side of the road, and descend about 30 feet down a hill. The truck crashed into a light post and guardrail, landing in the median between the lanes of U.S. 68.

A medical helicopter flew the driver of the semi, Charles Hawk, to Miami Valley Hospital. He was listed as being in serious condition. The driver of the Toyota received no injuries and received a citation for failure to control.

The semi-truck landed with enough impact to create a 16-inch hole in the roadway surface. “The road is actually separated and pushed away from the rest of the roadway,” said Springfield Twp. Police Chief Rick Hawvecker.

Fuel tanks came off the truck and spilled up to 100 gallons of diesel fuel on the northbound lanes of U.S. 68. Two steel discs fell off the flatbed onto the roadway. Both left two holes in the left lane of U.S. 68 ranging from eight to 15 feet in diameter.
