Leading Causes for Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

Traumatic brain injuries occur at least 1.7 million times annually and it contributes to a third of all injury-related fatalities in the United States. While typically 75% of these millions of incidents are mild and in the form of a concussion, there are some that can result in life-altering damage for the victim. The most likely age groups to experience horrific injuries to this region include the following:

  • Infants and toddlers ages 0-4 years old
  • Teens ages 25-19 years old
  • Elderly adults ages 65 years old and up

Among both genders, TBI most commonly happens to males. There are a variety of reasons why TBI can occur, with falls as the current leading cause (35.2% of all incidents). Motor vehicle accidents account for the second most common reason and cause 17.3% of all cases. While sometimes accidents just happen and TBI can be a direct result of a mere mistake, there are other instances when another's negligence is the reason for injury. Slippery floors in a retail establishment, poorly lit walkways in a public place, or uneven ground on someone's property could all be the cause of a slip and fall accident potentially resulting in TBI. Car accidents, truck collisions, motorcycle crashes and being hit as a pedestrian could also have the potential for serious brain damage, depending on the level of impact.
