A car crashed head-on into a semi-truck in Darke County on the morning of June 7, 2011. The accident shut down State Route 49 for hours. The collision occurred just after 5:00 a.m., near Drew Road.
Darke County deputies stated that the initial investigation shows that a semi being driven by Brad Muhlenkamp was headed north on Route 49. A Ford Taurus driven by Wesley Reier, was southbound on the road when his car went left of center, striking the semi head-on.
Reier’s car slid off the west side of the road, coming to rest in a ditch. The semi continued northbound, going off to the side of the road and striking a telephone pole.
Reier was trapped in the wreckage of his vehicle for about an hour. Emergency crews from Arcanum, Pitsburg and Greenville township worked together to free him from the car.
Deputies stated that a medical helicopter flew Reier to Miami Valley Hospital, where he is listed in crictical condition. Muhlenkamp was not injured.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
