Does Lack Of Skid Marks Indicate Distracted Driving?

A family of three was taken to an Akron area hospital after the Amish buggy they were riding in was struck by pickup truck on State Route 301 in Homer Township, WJW-TV reported on June 27, 2012. The impact destroyed the buggy, but the 28-year-old driver of the pickup was not hurt in the crash. The Ohio State Highway Patrol told WJW that the horse pulling the buggy had to be put down because of its injuries.

“The crash investigation indicates at this time that there were no skid marks [and] not really any signs of an attempt to stop on behalf of the pickup truck,” Lieutenant William Haymaker told WJW. The Highway Patrol determined that alcohol was not a factor in the crash, but said charges are pending upon review by the Medina County prosecutor’s office.

“It’s unknown what this driver was doing at the time just before the crash,” Haymaker told WJW. “I don’t know if he was distracted but with any driver again we just want to get the message out that when driving you need to take everybody’s safety into concern.”

This is pertinent advice from the lieutenant that applies to all motorists throughout Ohio. We can all learn a lot from a terrible accident like this. One neighbor told WJW that she worries about “those kind of accidents because some people drive carelessly on the two lane road.” The lack of skid marks that Lieutenant Haymaker referred to would certainly lead one to believe that the driver of the pickup could have very easily been distracted at the time of the accident.
