A crash involving a tractor-trailer and an SUV on U.S. Route 62 closed down traffic in both directions between Stahl Road and the Pickaway County line, WCMH-TV reported on October 17, 2011. According to the Franklin County sheriff’s office, preliminary investigation indicated the semi driver lost control, went left of center, hit a southbound passenger vehicle, went off the left side of the roadway and hit a guardrail.

WCMH reported that the driver of the SUV was transported to a local hospital in stable condition and the semi driver was transported to a local hospital in critical condition but was upgraded to stable condition with serious injuries to his legs. Although oil from the semi leaked on the roadway and into a creek below, WCMH said crews moved the semi out of the traffic lanes and attempted to minimize the environmental impact.

Why did the semi driver lose control of his vehicle? Could fatigue have been a factor? Was the driver possibly distracted with talking or texting on a cell phone?
