Traffic on Columbia Parkway had to be shut down for the second time in less than a week on August 20, 2011, when a four-vehicle crash closed traffic in both directions shortly before noon, according to WLWT.
The accident came just days after four Cincinnati City Council members held a news conference along the parkway in Mount Adams asking for the city to determine how to make the portion of Columbia Parkway east of Downtown safer for commuters. The August 18, 2011, press conference was in response to the accident on August 16 that critically injured Cincinnati police Sgt. Ron Schaeper.
However, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported that data for 2007 to 2009 collected for the state’s Highway Safety Program actually shows the parkway ranked as the 83rd most hazardous of 84 non-expressway highway locations in the city, with 15 accidents over the course of the three-year period. The Enquirer also noted that conditions appear to be more hazardous on River Road (U.S. 50 west of Downtown) and Fairbanks Avenue in Sedamsville, which had 75 crashes and 18 injuries over the same period.
